The Museum of Kilkis was founded in 1972-73 in order to house the finds from the area of Kilkis, mostly chance finds given by individuals. The exhibition has been enriched with numerous items revealed by the recent, systematic excavations conducted in the area. The display of the excavation finds from the Old Gynaikokastro, organized in 1991, left almost no free space in the museum itself and the storerooms, and an extension became necessary. After the approval of the study by the Central Archaeological Council, the building will soon be enlarged.
The chapters of the exhibition include:
1) prehistoric period finds
2) Iron Age finds
3) findings from the old Gynaikokastro
4) historical times findings
5) objects of traditions and earlier excavations
6) finds from the excavation of Palatianou
